DEFINITION OF SHARWARE
This software is provided as Shareware. This means you have the
opportunity to try it before you buy it. If you continue to use
this software for more than 30 days you are requested to become
a registered user. Registered users receive an update to the
most recent version of the software, a printed manual, and free
support.
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software be-
fore buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue us-
ing it, you are expected to register. Individual programs dif-
fer on details -- some request registration while others require
it, some specify a maximum trial period.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribu-
tion.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system
makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you
buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't
use the product, you don't pay for it.

What you need
The next two sections cover both necessary and optional equip-
ment supported by Beam Cookbook.

Here's what you need to run Beam Cookbook:
# Computer. Beam Cookbook runs on a IBM XT, AT, PS/2, and
fully compatible computers.
# Operating system. DOS 3.0 or higher.

524,288 bytes) of available random-access memory(RAM).
# Disk drive. Your computer must have hard disk with at
least 1 MB of space required.
Optional equipment
You don't need the following equipment, but each enhances Beam
Cookbook's performance:
# Graphics card. If you want to display a graphic repre-
sent-ation of a beam with it's loads, and beam diagrams
(shear, moment, slope, and deflection) you need a graphics
card and a monitor capable of high-resolution graphics (a
color monitor is not necessary). However, you can print
the graphics without a graphics card.
* IBM Color/Graphics Adapter
* Hercules (monochrome) Graphics Card
* IBM Enhanced Graphics Adapter (color or monochrome)

and uses any math coprocessor installed on your computer.
# Expanded memory card. You can add expanded memory cards
to your computer to increase the performance of in-
put/output windows and printing. Requires a minimum of
260k. Beam Cookbook works with any LIM 4.0 card.
INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
If you downloaded BEAM COOKBOOK from a BBS (or received it in
the form of archive files from some other source), you will need
to perform the following steps.
o Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this
varies, depending on the form in which you received the
package. In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading
this text means that you already have the necessary tools
and knowledge to perform this step. If not, you should be
able to obtain directions for this from the same source
from which you received the package.
o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted.
For example, if the temporary directory into which you have
extracted the BEAM COOKBOOK package is C:\TEMP, you would
execute the MS-DOS command, "c:\temp\install".
o Follow the instructions presented by the installation
program. You will have a chance to approve installation
before any changes are actually made to the contents of
your hard drive. The program will ask you for a
destination directory, and will copy the BEAM COOKBOOK
files to that directory. The installation program will
copy the executable programs, documentation, and samples
(optional) in the directory of your choice. It will make
no other changes; specifically, it will not modify your
autoexec.bat or config.sys files.
When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you
should delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed
BEAM COOKBOOK (C:\TEMP, in the above discussion), including all
its contents.
